Spanky's Grille was a long time dream of Ben Zak. On May 16th, 1999 Jennifer Cooper married him anyway. The couple bought a commercial lot in 2001and in 2002 Narrow Shores started construction. On July 19th, 2003 Spanky's grille opened for business. The restaurant has been a favorite of locals and visitors ever since.

Spanky's attributes their success to one word. Value. They serve great food at a great price. Most customers eat for under ten dollars, many eat for under five. If you're short on cash, you can always get a 100% all beef hot dog for seventy nine cents. How good are Spanky's deep fried hotdogs? The Urban Spoon ranked Spankys as one of the top ten hot dogs stands in North Carolina for both 2010 and 2011.

What are the three top sellers at Spankys? The first is the authentic buffalo chicken sandwich. The sauce is made fresh and uses real butter. The second big seller is the homemade crabcakes which are made first thing every morning. The third item is the classic cheeseburger. Spanky's burgers are hand shaped every morning from an 81/19 grind.

Other popular menu items are fresh grilled chicken sandwiches, authentic philly cheese steaks on hard rolls (Wednesdays and Thursdays only), true North Carolina BBQ, 100% all beef footlongs, fresh fried chicken, fried okra, sweet potato fries, homemade hushpuppies, homemade coleslaw, banana pudding, and southern style funnel cakes topped with powdered sugar.
